ACCOMMODATION

The Kroonwild accommodation consists of three individual chalets that accommodate a total of 14 guests. The chalets are contained within a camp that is situated on one of the highest parts of the farm. The chalets and the lapa (entertainment area) all have beautiful views over the valley below. Servicing of chalets and kitchen is available at an additional fee.

CHALETS and ROOMS

Each chalet is named after an indigenous tree situated near it and they are structured as follows:

Moepel sleeps six persons. It has two separate bedrooms and each bedroom has it’s own en-suite bathroom containing a basin, shower and toilet. Moepel has an open plan living area containing a kitchen, dining room and indoor fireplace. The kitchen is fitted with a kettle, dishwasher, gas stove, frying pan, toaster and cooking utensils. The living area also contains 2 single beds. The beds in the rooms and the living area can be configured as singles or king size beds. The chalet is equipped with cutlery, crockery and glasses for six persons and is fitted with an air-conditioned.

Moepel Tree Botanical info:

Red milkwood / Moepel
Botanical Name: Mimusops zeyheri

A medium sized decorative tree that has a spreading, densely rounded crown. It has the potential to make an excellent evergreen garden specimen for larger gardens, parks and golf courses. This tree casts a deep shade, which offers a cool escape from the hot African sun. Moepel fruit looks similar to Stamvrug fruit but the Moepel fruit hangs from stems where as Stamvrug fruit hangs directly from the bark of the tree.

The Transvaal red milkwood has gained its popularity with people, birds as well as monkeys and baboons through its tasty fruit which are sweet and high in vitamin C.

Suikerbos sleeps four persons. It has one communal bathroom with a toilet and shower. The beds can be configured as needed: 4 single beds / 1 king size bed and 2 singles / 2 king size beds. The chalet is equipped with a kettle for coffee/tea and glasses for four persons. The chalet is air-conditioned.

Suikerbos Botanical Info:

Sugarbush / Honey Protea / Suikerbos

Botanical Name: Protea repens

The species name of ‘repens’, meaning ‘creeping’ is misleading as Protea repens is an upright, much-branched shrub. Protea repens is one of the easiest, most adaptable and reliable proteas in cultivation and has a great cultural heritage as it inspired songs such as “Suikerbos ek wil jou hê”, which was composed on Lion’s Head near Cape Town!

The Suikerbos flowers (proteas) produce nectar which attracts nectar loving birds, insects like ants, bees and butterflies.

‘Bossiestroop’ or bush syrup, boiled from the nectar collected, is used curing coughs and other chest ailments.

Stamvrug Tree Botanical Info:

Transvaal Milkplum / Stamvrug
Botanical name: Englerophytum magalismontanum

Stamvrug fruit looks similar to Moepel fruit but Moepel fruit hangs from stems where as Stamvrug fruit hangs directly from the bark of the tree.

Stamvrug is a hardy, evergreen small to medium sized slow growing tree. The young leaves are a lovely bronze colour and turn glossy, blue-green with a waxy bloom as they mature. This bloom gives the tree a silvery look.

The small, brownish-pink star-shaped flowers are clustered along the stems from June to December. They are followed by delicious, edible bright red berries also borne densely clustered along the stems hence the common name Stamvrug (stem fruit). It is host to Boisduval’s False Acraea butterfly and the fruit is relished by birds and other wildlife.

A delicious jam or syrup can be made from the fruit. It also has many medicinal uses.
